Reviewing Your Policy
Once you have purchased your life insurance policy you cannot just "get it and forget it." You will need to review your policy about every two years to make sure that it still fits your needs and the needs of your family. There are several things that will need to be reviewed and analyzed to make sure you are still getting the best coverage for the best rate. Sometimes, if your life has not changed much, you will be able to continue on with your current policy without making many adjustments. If you have recently married or divorced, had children, changed jobs or retired you may need to change your policy and be naming a beneficiary to receive your payout. Make sure you review your policy after any major life change.
What Do I Need To Review
Two main things that need to be reviewed are protection and premiums you are paying for life insurance. Do you still have adequate coverage? Do you have too much coverage? These are questions you will need to ask your insurance agent or financial planner when you meet for a review of your policy. If you have more bills that would need to be paid by the policy you may need to increase your coverage. If you have additional coverage through your employment you may be able to get by with less coverage. You also need to consider the amount you are paying out in premiums each year. Does it still fit into your current budget? If you are experiencing a financial hardship ask your insurance professional if the policy can be adjusted to make it more affordable. Maybe you have been blessed in the last few years and would like to pay more into your premiums. Your insurance agent can help you with this also.
Other areas that need to be considered when reviewing your policy include ownership and beneficiaries. This basically deals with the tax implications that can either help or hurt your policy. Many of us own policies because they are a great tax free investment. Policy payouts are not taxed in the event the owner dies. This is a great help to the beneficiary who is struggling with the loss of a loved one and does not need the added stress. You will also need to review your beneficiaries often. The most logical person to name as the beneficiary to your policy is the person who will be responsible for paying the bills once you are gone. If you have recently divorced or married you need to make sure the correct person is named as the recipient of your life insurance policy. You may also want to review the wording of your policy when it comes to children. If you want to include a spouse's child from a previous marriage or adopted children or future children you need to make sure the wording expresses your intentions.
Reviewing your life insurance policy is the responsible thing to do. With our busy lives we sometimes forget that we need to make sure our family is taken care in the event we are killed or die unexpectedly from an accident or illness. Once we are gone it is too late to go back and make the changes we meant to make months before. Life insurance can be tricky and if your wishes are not clearly and accurately expressed it can lead to intense legal battles at a time when emotions are high to start with. Think about your family and friends and schedule a life insurance review today.
